Workshops

The past three weekends have been chaotic, but an amazing time and I have had some great experiences.  Three weeks ago, I took some hip-hop workshop classes from people from ABDC.  Their style was unique and different than a lot of the other classes I have taken in the past.  The next day I went to the Kodachrome workshops.  The following week, I had an opportunity to go to Prague in Czech Republic.  I didn't do much dancing, but I did get to see some from a different perspective and culture.  This past weekend, I was able to go to the Movement Lifestyle tour, and got to work with some amazing hip-hop choreographers.  Some of their different styles were difficult for me to execute while learning the choreography as well.  After years of competition dance, making movements small or relaxed is a difficult thing for me.  I am just trying my best to get as much exposure and practice in different settings as I can before December.  It is also very interesting to me to see the similarities between contemporary and hip-hop dancing.  A lot of the movements are the same or have the same basic step, just done differently.  Basically, everything I am doing is trying to utilize any and all resources I can find to get any advice on options to pursue careers within the dancing industry as I possibly can.  The plus side is that I also love it and am having so much fun with all these learning opportunities that I can find!!

The Beginning

I am months away from graduating with a business marketing degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.  As of December 2012, I will be done with my undergraduate studies.  Graduating in three and a half years was challenging considering that I decided in Spring 2011 that this was the path I wanted to take.  I am starting this blog to personally track the events and challenges I go through in the next few years, and possibly help younger aspiring dancers in their futures by learning from my experiences as well.  Oh, by the way, I am pursuing a career in dance after December.  I forgot to mention that, which is the whole reason I am writing at all.  My first choice to pursue would be contemporary and jazz.  However, I have found a new love for hip-hop as well.  I have also trained in ballet, tap, lyrical, musical theater, pointe, and various ballroom styles briefly.  Expressing myself through my dancing is the best way I know how and honestly, I am not a huge fan of writing or reading so we will see how this goes.  I will try my best to make this blog interesting and informative and not just reading that afterwards you regret wasting your time.  I guess let me know if you like what you read! Thanks! :)
